PUBLIC NOTICE FROM WETZEL COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE
TO 
WETZEL COUNTY REGISTERED VOTERS


Every registered voter in Wetzel County should receive an application in the mail to vote absentee by mail in the June 9, 2020 Primary Election. This process is new and due to the Coronavirus pandemic.


Absentee ballot application should be completed in the voter’s own handwriting, and returned by mail (Wetzel County Clerk, P.O. 156, New Martinsville, WV 26155), fax (304-455-5256) or email (countyclerk@wetzelcc.com or wetzelcounty@wvsos.com). Voters who have already submitted an absentee ballot application should disregard the mailing. If a registered voter does not receive an application by April 17, 2020, please contact the County Clerk’s Office.


Absentee ballot applications must be received in the County Clerk’s Office no later than June 3, 2020. Absentee ballots must be mailed and postmarked to the County Clerk by no later than Election Day, June 9, 2020.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Be advised that the Circuit Clerk’s Office, County Clerk’s Office and Sheriff’s Tax Office will continue to limit public access (face to face contact) between the public and our employees until further notice due to the Coronavirus and extension by the President and Governor on social distancing and other restrictions through April 30, 2020.

Offices will continue to be staffed during regular business hours and we will be available by telephone, fax or email.  We will not be staffed on Saturdays.

Each county elects a county clerk whose responsibilities include the management of records of the county commission and election duties. The primary responsibilities center around two basic functions:

  • To act as clerk (fiscal officer) of the county commission
  • To act as the receiver of fees charged for the instruments filed and recorded within the county.
To carry out the numerous duties, the clerk of the county commission may select deputies and other employees. The budget for the operation of the county clerk’s office as a whole is determined by the county commission. The salary range for county clerks is from $42,200 to $55,440 and is required to be full-time in Class I-V counties. Their duties include:
  • Issuance of marriage licenses, birth and death certificates
  • Record births, marriages and deaths in the county
  • Serve as Chief Voter Registration Official for the county; register qualified voters
  • Maintain custody and integrity of the county’s voting machines, ballot boxes and other election supplies
  • Conduct training sessions for poll clerks and other election officials prior to their service
  • Serve as the recorder of all documents
  • Keep records of County Commission transactions
  • Keep minutes of all County Commission meetings
  • Responsible for the bookkeeping of the county including budget, accounting and payroll
  • Assist the County Commission in their absence
  • Responsible for public notice of all Commission meetings
  • Serve as Secretary to the Civil Service Commissions
  • Provide notary services (Not Statutory Duty)
  • Issue military service discharge records
  • Probate wills and assist in administration of estates
  • Conduct absentee voting and early voting, prepare ballots, accept candidate filings, and other election-related duties
